Arriving to Hotel Les Roches Rouges
Leaving Ramatuelle and the golden sands of Pampelonne is difficult. Very, very difficult. However, on a beautiful September morning, air salty from the sea spray and fragrant from the pine trees and pleasures of the Provence, one does not have to leave behind the glamour of the fifties and sixties just yet.
Past the hustle of Saint-Tropez along a gorgeous coastal road that winds and seduces village after village is Saint-Raphaël and Agay, where Hotel Les Roches Rouges is situated. And what a spot it is to occupy! The immensity of the sea and the clean modernist design will win over even the most discerning visitor from the first moment they set foot in the property.
Set on the glorious Provence coast between St. Tropez and Cannes, Hôtel Les Roches Rouges is a sanctuary of barefoot Riviera luxury steeped in a natural environment which nestles and protects it from the outside while at the same time is completely open to the drama of the sea and sun.
Architecture and design in Hotel Les Roches Rouges
Renowned Parisian architecture firm Festen has reworked the late-1950s/early-1960s structure, stripping away unnecessary ornamentation and bad renovations from the 1980s and 1990s to emphasise the clean nautical-modernist lines of classic French Riviera architecture and put full focus on the vast blue expanse of Mediterranean Sea unfurling just outside the windows. Well known design pieces are in total harmony with plenty of custom furniture and polished concrete, built by local carpenters to balance the ages.
Far from the madding crowds, the hotel offers several wooden huts and lookout points for admiring the sunset and nature, while its Mediterranean garden in a natural landscape showcases aromatic vegetation that thrives in coastal terrain. The highlight might well be a big natural seawater swimming pool and a swimming lane cut into the coastal rock, with bar service provided to the plush loungers should you feel peckish or a sudden need to increase the amount of rosé in your system.
Food in Hotel Les Roches Rouges
Food is done extremely well at Les Roches Rouges and the proof is in the Michelin star awarded pudding that is La Terrasse, serving lunch and dinner where locally sourced fresh produce and seafood is definitely the real deal.
The perfect Provence escape
For the aesthete, Hôtel Les Roches Rouges is a rare gem of a find. The property is bathed in azure blue, pure white, and red ochre. Concrete, aged oak and terra cotta ceramics; all authentic and natural to the local vibe, along with endless sea views, a waterfront setting, and a focus on personal wellbeing, embrace guests looking for the perfect Provence escape.
Given it’s enviable location, there isn’t much you can reach by foot from the property and a car is definitely a good idea to explore further, however the hotel arranges a broad range of activities on a daily basis and they are more than enough to keep even the most restless soul occupied for a few days (or as Müd recommends, just wind down with wine in hand, sniffing the sea air and soaking in the atmosphere). Also worth noting that the beautiful rooms, most of which have a terrace overlooking the sea, don’t come equipped with a TV. We think that is a welcome touch.
